Timed Intercourse (TI)

Programmed or timed intercourse is a simple assisted reproduction technique that involves tracking ovulation to determine the optimal time to have sex in order to achieve pregnancy.

The aim

is to synchronise the moment when the woman releases the egg from the ovary into the fallopian tube (ovulation) with the ejaculation of the man, or with the entry of sperm into the female reproductive tract. This synchronisation is key since the egg is only able to survive for around 12-24 hours in the fallopian tube.

To achieve this goal, we track the woman’s menstrual cycle through blood tests and ultrasound. Based on this information, the timing of intercourse will be planned, and two weeks later a pregnancy test will be carried out to see whether the technique has been successful. This monitoring can be within a natural cycle (without medication) or alongside hormonal medication administered to the woman to ensure greater control of follicular development and ovulation.
