What does artificial insemination involve?

Artificial insemination, or AI, is a low-complexity assisted reproduction technique. It consists of very gentle ovarian stimulation aimed at achieving a periovulatory follicle and then coordinating ovulation with the introduction of a selected sperm sample into the woman’s uterus to favour fertilisation of the egg. It is a procedure that aims to mimic a natural cycle while increasing the chances of success by coordinating ovulation with intrauterine placement of semen.

Types of artificial insemination at our clinic in Seville

Depending on each patient’s needs or family model, we adapt the technique:

Partner artificial insemination, or IAC

Also known as homologous insemination, this is performed using the partner’s semen when there are mild difficulties achieving pregnancy naturally.

Donor artificial insemination, or IAD

Recommended for single mothers, female same-sex couples or cases of severe male factor infertility. When donor sperm is used, the general probability of success is higher, as a donor with optimal and previously analysed semen quality is selected and processed. DNA fragmentation test

This test allows us to analyse the integrity of the genetic material in sperm cells. Detecting high levels of fragmentation before insemination is key to deciding whether AI is the optimal path or whether we should first apply improvement techniques.

Zymot

As in IVF, we can use the Zymot system to prepare the sample for AI. This device selects, in a non-invasive way, sperm cells with better motility and lower fragmentation, imitating the natural selection process of the female reproductive tract.

Gentle stimulation

Using low doses of medication, we gently stimulate follicular development, monitored through regular ultrasounds at the hospital.

Laboratory capacitation

The moment of insemination

Coinciding with your ovulatory period, the gynaecologist introduces a fine cannula to deposit the sample in the uterine cavity. It is a quick procedure carried out in consultation, allowing you to return to your normal activities afterwards.
