MACS

The quality of sperm directly and crucially influences the achievement of pregnancy. Not only is good sperm motility important, in addition, its membrane must be intact and functional. In some patients, there are faults in this membrane, caused by a process of cell death (apoptosis), leading to failures in fertilisation.

Magnetic Activated Cell Sorting (MACS) is a non-invasive sperm selection technique. It consists of providing an extra filter to the semen sample in which sperm that present signs of apoptosis (cell death) are separated out.

Thus, the sperm selected for the fertilisation of the eggs offer the best potential outcome, improving the results of the techniques and their safety for the future baby.

This technique especially benefits patients with an altered or borderline sperm DNA fragmentation test and can be performed as part of assisted reproduction techniques such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilisation with sperm microinjection (ICSI).
